Irrational Fear is Conquered Through Action, Living Happy and Avoiding Burnout (with Jennifer Moss)

WHAT I'M WRITING ABOUT THIS WEEK

In this week's blog, I write about how irrational fear is conquered through action. It’s common for fear to provoke you to do things you shouldn’t or to convince you to avoid things you should embrace. It’s uncommon to commit to overcoming them. You can learn to be calm in the face of irrational fear by accepting it for what it is, just a signal from your nervous system. You can take it one step further and think of it as a friend reminding you to step up your game and tap into the 20X potential that lives inside.

THE MARK DIVINE SHOW

Being a Responsible Leader

Episode #395 Living Happy and Avoiding Burnout with Jennifer Mos

This week on the podcast, Mark speaks with Jennifer Moss. Jennifer is a nationally syndicated radio columnist and freelance journalist. She writes for Harvard Business Review, and her work has appeared in CNN, TIME, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. Jennifer is the author of The Burnout Epidemic and Unlocking Happiness at Work. Her written works are a resource for leaders and individuals who want to cultivate equity, value, and balance in how we approach work life from a lens of interconnectivity and empowerment.

Key Takeaways:

  • Saying No for the Bigger Yes: It is essential to learn how to say no to things that are not in alignment with our values and goals. To be honest with ourselves and others by expressing our no from a place of clarity of what our bigger yes is.
  • Invisible Pressure: When leaders/bosses email employees on off-work hours, it creates invisible pressure. Because so many companies have shifted to remote work, leaders need to be aware of this invisible pressure and model proper work-life balance. Also, recognizing that due to employee gender, race, sexual orientation, and other factors, by not having awareness regarding emails, meetings, and conversations, leaders can sometimes unconsciously create a culture of inequity.
  • The Difference Between Technical and Adaptive problems: Leaders need to look at the difference between psychoemotional issues, the work culture they create, and mental health as separate from systematic issues. As a leader, you can understand that you are not a mental health professional. However, it is your responsibility to be the conduit for your employees so that they have the resources for mental health. This means putting systems in place for the adaptive problems and recognizing they are separate variables to be addressed.
  • Are we Mating or Meeting: How the brain registers our interaction with others on zoom or other online meeting platforms is important to recognize. Because we are not seeing the whole person and are able to gauge the eyes, our brain is registering the interaction from an animal instinct of mating or fighting. This is problematic in ways that create defensive and aggressive behaviors that would not happen if you were meeting in person with your people.

WHAT I'M READING

Authentic Leadership

by Dan Owolabi
This book explores why the most effective leaders have nothing to hide, nothing to prove, and nothing to lose. They know how to battle insecurity and lead with influence by growing through four stages: Understand Yourself, Lead Yourself, Understand Others, and Lead Others. Owolabi writes that it is no accident that Authentic Leaders are magnetic, confident, and resilient leaders. And you can become one too!

WHAT'S INSPIRING ME

Learning more about what is happening with our global population and how population growth affects each country has inspired me to investigate the impact. As I continue my research for my Global Leadership Ph.D. I recognize more and more the interconnectivity of business, environmental balance, and human rights issues. I am inspired to think outside the box and start to learn why some populations are on the rise while others are declining. This informs me on how to make purchases, what to read, and where to visit. Visualizing the World-Changing Population

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

PRACTICE OR HABIT TO TRY

Grab your journal, find a quiet place, and sit comfortably. Box breathe for five or ten rounds and connect to your witness. Once connected, think of the most recent time you were afraid and watch the entire event unfold in your mind. Make sure you can feel the fear that you felt when it first happened.

Assess the source of your fear or anxiety: Is it around loss? Not having enough? Not being enough? A desire to control what you can’t? Now take a minute to adopt the attitude of impermanence, as life is always changing. Make the choice to eradicate fear, doubt, or anxiety by moving toward the source of that fear mentally. Create a visualization where you conquer the fear by dominating the situation. Reflect on what you can do to interdict this fear loop for good, such as: closing the skill gap, taking different steps to properly prepare next time, and committing more consistently to your morning mantra and concentration practices. Take time to journal your insights. Develop positive self-talk for this specific skill or event. Write down your mantra or phrases and commit them to memory. Practice your new visualization daily and interdict any fear when it arises. You can do this by box breathing and redirecting your mind to your mantra.
