Kyrsten Sinema is changing her party affiliation to independent, jolting Democrats' narrow Senate majority and Washington along with it.
In an interview, the centrist Arizona senator would not say whether she plans to seek reelection in 2024. Deregistering as a Democrat, Sinema said, reflects that she's "never really fit into a box of any political party."
Thanks to Sen. Raphael Warnock's (D-Ga.) reelection this week, Democrats are expected to hold 51 seats next year, entitling them to majorities on Senate committees. And while she counts multiple GOP senators as close friends, Sinema doesn't plan to caucus with Republicans and doesn't expect her independent status to change the fabric of the Senate: "I don't anticipate that anything will change about the Senate structure. And I'm gonna keep doing what I do."
