Shay Horse/NurPhoto via Getty Images After 10 months and 1,000 interviews, the House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol will begin primetime hearings on Thursday at 8 pm ET. [CNN / Paul LeBlanc] The panel will discuss what former President Donald Trump did while a mob of his supporters violently stormed the building and reveal its findings on the extent of the plot to overturn Trump's 2020 election loss. [Slate / Dennis Aftergut] To tell that story, the committee of seven Democrats and two Republicans will present testimony from people within the Trump Administration. [Washington Post / Jacqueline Alemany, Josh Dawsey, and Amy Gardner] It's unclear how much Americans will care about the hearings amid soaring inflation, a recent series of mass shootings, and a nationwide baby formula shortage, however. [Associated Press / Calvin Woodward] For the committee, success will require capturing the American public's attention, pushing the Justice Department to investigate those responsible, and getting Congress to advance legislation to prevent another attack on democracy. [Reuters / Patricia Zengerle] UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson hangs on ... for now On Monday evening, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced a vote of no confidence for throwing parties during strict Covid-19 lockdowns. [AP / Jill Lawless] He narrowly survived the vote, which came to 211 vs 148. To be ousted, 180 Conservative MPs would have had to vote no confidence. [New York Times / Mark Landler and Stephen Castle] Last month, Johnson became the first sitting prime minister found to have broken the law after an official investigation found he flouted restrictions established by his government. [NPR / Bill Chappell and Frank Langfitt] At least 15 percent of Johnson's Conservative Party signed letters calling for the vote; it would have taken a simple majority of Tory lawmakers to oust him. [CNN / Luke McGee] Johnson's survival means that Tory MPs can't challenge him for at least a year — but the vote is likely to deal a severe blow to his authority and power. His predecessor, Theresa May, struggled to govern after her no confidence motion and ultimately resigned. [BBC] MISCELLANEOUS Ten mass shootings left at least 12 people dead and dozens more injured over the weekend. [Washington Post / Julian Mark] Saturday, Abbott Nutrition said it would reopen production at its Michigan plant, whose shutdown contributed to the nationwide baby formula shortage. [CBS News / Caroline Linton] President Joe Biden has waived tariffs on solar panels from Southeast Asia for two years and announced emergency measures to ramp up US production.
