So far, it's proven to be THE case of 2022. It's been playing out in a courtroom in Fairfax County, VA, and (of course) in the court of public opinion. It all started when Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard, his ex-wife, to the tune of $50 million. Why? Because he says that she defamed him by accusing him of domestic abuse. Amber Heard then turned around and counter-sued him, this time to the tune of $100 million. Why? Because she felt that his legal team falsely accused her of fabricating claims against Depp Along the way, we learned a whole lot more about what went on behind closed doors. More, I dare say, than any of us ever wanted to. You could argue that the suit and counter-suit have left both of their careers in shambles. And it seems like a whole lot of drama for a marriage that lasted just a little over a year. I'm pushing this edition out until the verdict finally hits, but I know one thing right now while we're still waiting on it: we, the people, most certainly came out the losers. Here's the full rundown, but it's a good day for Johnny Depp. Despite the verdict being in, I doubt we've heard the last of this one. (read more) |

The Biden administration is seeking to keep mask restrictions in place on flights and other kinds of public transportation, filing an appeal in April to reverse a judge's decision finding the CDC's mask mandate unconstitutional. In April, Florida Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle ruled that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention overstepped its bounds by imposing a mask mandate on airlines, buses, trains, and other modes of public transportation. The administration vowed to appeal, and this week they delivered on that promise. It's obvious that the mandate has been very unpopular with most Americans. (read more) |

Buffett is putting a lot of money into the energy business. Oil and gas prices have soared in recent months due to various factors. A jump in demand and a failure to increase production, the Russian war in Ukraine, which has hampered oil supplies from one of the world's top oil producers due to NATO sanctions, and supply chain issues are among them. Buffett is also increasing his stake in the technology industry, with new positions in HP and Activision, which Microsoft recently purchased. These companies were picked from the investment portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of the first quarter of 2022. The stocks that are a new addition to the portfolio, compared to filings for the fourth quarter of 2021, and are up year-to-date (read more) |

A new two-part documentary is shedding light on sexual abuse within the Amish community. "My first perpetrator was my biological father," revealed 39-year-old Mary Byler before adding, "I was five." Byler is the lead subject of the documentary entitled Sins of the Amish where she opens up about enduring trauma by multiple male family members. "It's a predator's paradise," she says as she recounts abuse from her father and three of her siblings. Byler recalled how her brother started abusing her younger sister after her, and that her mother did nothing to try to stop it. Byler then decided to pull back the curtain on the crimes and alerted the authorities, who outfitted her with a wire in hopes of catching a confession from her brothers. So, what ultimately happened, and how did her community react to the news of the assaults? (read more) |
