Across the nation, thousands of students coordinated to stage walkouts at schools and college campuses yesterday. Their protest is part of an effort to demand stricter gun control following the Robb Elementary School massacre that left 19 students and two teachers dead. The walkout began at 12:00 p.m. EST and saw waves of students (many of them wearing orange in honor of the gun violence prevention movement) abandon classes and head outside. A woman blamed her GPS after the SUV she was driving plunged down a flight of stairs in Portland, Maine. We've all heard stories about people who follow their GPS too literally at times, even if the directions just don't make sense. Because after all, the GPS just knows, right? What's even funnier about this situation is it happened at a police station. A 26-year-old woman was leaving the parking garage at the police station when she drove toward a flight of stairs that led to the road and decided to take her chances driving down them. The vehicle became stuck on the stairs, so she ended up stranded. But the woman was insistent that her GPS caused the entire ordeal. Police officers thought otherwise and ended up pinpointing this as the real problem. (read more) |

A new study conducted by the University of Portsmouth revealed that asking a suspected liar to carry out an additional task while being questioned is an effective way to expose if in fact they are lying. Because lying requires more brain power, asking them to exert more to perform a secondary task proved to be more challenging. In the experiment, 164 individuals were asked to recall a seven-digit car registration number and was found to only be effective if the individuals were under the impression that was important information. "In the last 15 years we have shown that lies can be detected by outsmarting lie tellers. We demonstrated that this can be done by forcing lie tellers to divide their attention between formulating a statement and a secondary task," said Professor Aldert Vrij. (read more) |
