McCARTHY RAKES IT IN FROM K STREET: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy hauled in more than $9.5 million at a fundraiser downtown Wednesday night, our Alex Isenstadt reports, shattering his previous record for a Washington event — $350,000 — and indicating that corporate dollars are already flowing to Republicans as the party appears favored to win back power in November's midterms.

— Turnout for the high-dollar event, which featured every House GOP ranking member, was so substantial that its hosts, Miller Strategies' Jeff Miller and CGCN Group's John Stipicevic and Sam Geduldig, had to scramble to find a larger venue to accommodate the crowd of a little over 100, eventually settling on the Trump International Hotel. (And recall that the price to get in the door wasn't cheap, with tickets starting at $25,000 and going up to $100,000 to benefit McCarthy's campaign and leadership PACs, as well as House Republicans' campaign arm.) Overall, Alex reports, "more than 50 corporate PACs were represented as well as an array of major individual donors, many of whom flew in from out of town."

— Among the K Street types there, Geduldig told PI, were Salo Zelermyer and Chris Parinello of Valero, Heather Kennedy of The Home Depot, Kristan Nevins of Blackstone, Fred Humphries and Alli Halataei of Microsoft, Mike Sommers of the American Petroleum Institute, Emily and Eric Hargan of The Hargan Group, Jessica Mandel and Ashley Gunn of Miller Strategies, Mark Oesterle of Truist, Joe Hughes of American Airlines, Tori Barnes of the U.S. Travel Association, and CGCN's Michael Catanzaro, Antonia Ferrier and Tim Pataki.

FORMER EMILY'S LIST HEAD JOINS NFT PLATFORM: Stephanie Schriock, who led the pro-abortion-rights political action committee EMILY's List for more than a decade, is joining the board of advisers at the left-leaning nonfungible token marketplace Front Row.

— The organization launched last fall, founded by Democratic strategists to cater to progressive causes and campaigns as a growing number of political candidates seek to fund their campaigns through sales of the unique digital assets. Parker Butterworth , a Front Row co-founder, told POLITICO earlier this month that NFTs could eventually serve as passes for augmented-reality campaign rallies or events in "digital living rooms," while Washington regulators and policymakers scramble to catch up with the new technology.

— "Often credited with inventing low-dollar fundraising on Howard Dean 's presidential campaign, Stephanie's successful political career trajectory will be influential in the company's ability to continue its aim in ushering in a new era for modernized political giving, one that further engages the next generation of voters and rewards existing supporters with tangible digital recognition," the group said in an announcement of Schriock's new role.

— Under Schriock, EMILY's List, which works to elect women who back abortion rights, grew into a major force in Democratic politics. The organization raised nearly half a billion dollars during Schriock's tenure, endorsing 1,800 women and dropping $160 million on outside spending in that time.

Technical standards like 5G and Wi-Fi have the power to transform industries, fuel the economy, and create high-quality jobs. But that only happens if owners of patents essential to standards honor their commitments to license all innovators to use those patents on fair and reasonable terms. A new draft Administration statement restores the balance vital to standards adoption and job creation. Support the Administration to promote American manufacturing and limit product bans on standard-essential patents.

TOP DONORS PUT SINEMA ON NOTICE: "A group of big-dollar donors who have spent millions electing Kyrsten Sinema and other Democratic senators threatened to sever all funding to her due to her opposition to changing Senate rules in order to pass voting rights legislation," POLITICO's Holly Otterbein reports.

— "In a letter to the Arizona lawmaker, which was first obtained by POLITICO, 70 Democratic donors — some of whom gave Sinema's 2018 campaign the maximum contribution allowed by law — said they would support a primary challenge to Sinema and demanded that she refund their contributions to her 2018 campaign if she didn't change her position." (She did not change her position.)

— "We are terrified about our prospects as a democracy if we do not pass the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis VRA Act," the donors, who said they have given a combined $2.5 million to Sinema and the DSCC over the years, wrote in the 1,400-word missive . "We appreciate your support of these bills, but they will die without your action on Senate rules. Bipartisanship works only if it is reciprocal. Republicans are gutting our electoral system in state capitals with no federal check on them. This is life and death important to us." The letter's signatories include business executive Merle Chambers, billionaire Vincent Ryan, philanthropist Trey Beck, and former Planned Parenthood Federation of America board chair Naomi Aberly.

— "The broadside is the latest example of the fury among a growing number of Democratic donors, lawmakers and organizations after Sinema's rejection of their pleas to do away with the filibuster." For example, EMILY's List said today it will "no longer be able to endorse Sen. Sinema moving forward."

— Other groups, including the abortion rights group NARAL and liberal organizations like the League of Conservation Voters, End Citizens United // Let America Vote, Latino Victory Fund, Black Voters Matter Fund and the Collective PAC, "also recently announced they would not throw their weight behind any candidate who declines to 'take all necessary measures' to pass voting rights legislation."

HOW MICROSOFT LANDED ON WASHINGTON'S GOOD SIDE: The Washington Post's Cat Zakrzewski has a good look at how the relative silence from key congressional antitrust figures this week on Microsoft's deal to acquire Activision for nearly $70 billion "underscores how Microsoft has carved out a distinct reputation among policymakers, distancing itself from the political scrutiny embroiling its top competitors in Washington."

— "As Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Google were marshaling their Washington resources to beat back competition legislation up for debate on Capitol Hill this week, Microsoft smoothly announced one of the largest acquisitions in the history of the tech industry," in part by apparently leaning on "its reputation with lawmakers to assure them about the deal."

— "Two decades after fighting its own antitrust battles in Washington, Microsoft has emerged as a sophisticated and experienced Washington operator, positioning itself as a willing participant in regulation and developing relationships that engender rare trust. The company has come a long way since the 1990s, when it was viewed as an arrogant competitor with little regard for politicking. Lawmakers in recent years have treated Redmond, Wash., where Microsoft is headquartered, like a trusted ally in their efforts to rein in other large tech companies."

CRYPTO MINING IN DEMS' CROSSHAIRS: "Democrats in Congress are ramping up pressure on cryptocurrency firms to show that Bitcoin is worth the wattage, amid concerns that minting digital money has become an environmental disaster," POLITICO's Sam Sutton reports.

— "Scrutiny from lawmakers including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and the leadership of the House Energy and Commerce Committee is triggering lobbying on behalf of so-called crypto miners who are using an escalating amount of computing and electricity to extract valuable digital tokens from the blockchain."

— The congressional oversight, which has prompted a hearing today with industry executives, "is expected to intensify now that the U.S. is home to more crypto mining capacity than any other country, following a crackdown in China. With crypto mining now a multibillion-dollar business, the industry is fighting to make the case that lawmakers shouldn't stand in the way of an economic boom."

— "'It's not up to the government to decide if Bitcoin is important to the country's future — that's the market,' said Bitfury CEO Brian Brooks, who served as a top Trump bank regulator before taking the helm of the crypto mining company. 'The market has spoken.'

— "Deciding how to address Bitcoin's environmental fallout is the latest policy conundrum that lawmakers and regulators face with the crypto market now worth $2 trillion. While much of the focus in Washington has been on protecting consumers from financial risks, crypto mining is spilling over into the broader debate around tackling climate change."

SURVEYING THE DONOR EVENT LANDSCAPE 2 YEARS INTO COVID: Last year saw a return to more widespread in-person fundraising events, a trend that's expected to continue as November's midterms inch closer. Allegra Hewell Wilson of the Hewell Events Group , who plans Washington galas and awards ceremonies, offered her outlook on the state of fundraising in 2022 in a Q&A with fundraiser Ann Fitzgerald.

— Her main takeaway? Though she's optimistic about a more fulsome return to in-person events, Wilson warned that supply chain hiccups and labor shortages, combined with donors' varying comfort levels surrounding public health precautions, will require "flexibility and understanding. This is still not an easy environment. Groups need to be flexible with budgeting and planning and understanding with their vendors."

A message from Save Our Standards:

Support US Jobs. Stop SEP Abuse.

A new draft policy statement on standard-essential patents (SEPs) committed for licensing on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms was released jointly by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Department of Justice. The draft statement provides guidance on appropriate remedies in cases involving the use of these patents, and presents an approach to SEPs that strives to balance the interests of patent holders with the broad range of U.S. industries that use standards to protect the future of innovation.

Save Our Standards is a broad-based coalition working to end abusive practices in SEP licensing. We welcome the draft statement and support the Biden Administration for their leadership protecting U.S. competitiveness in charting out this balanced approach. Comments are being accepted through February 4. Support the Biden Administration to stop SEP abuse.
