Senate Republicans blocked Democrats' election reform bill Wednesday, setting up a nighttime floor battle over changing the chamber's rules that's poised to end in another Democratic defeat.
In a 49-51 vote, Republicans unanimously stopped Democrats from cutting off debate on the legislation, which would expand early voting, make Election Day a federal holiday and restore provisions of the Voting Rights Act that federal courts have pared back.
Senate Democrats will now try to change their own rules to allow the election legislation to pass by a simple majority, circumventing the filibuster. That maneuver, however, is also expected to fail amid opposition from Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.). See here for complete coverage.
