Dear BoF Community,

The return of makeup after a disastrous 2020 was undoubtedly the biggest story to emerge in the beauty industry in 2021. Shoppers started buying lipstick and foundation again, while still investing in the categories they fell in love with during lockdown, including skin care, fragrance and nail care. Makeup wasn't the only old favourite to make a comeback: some of the best known beauty founders of the '90s, including Urban Decay's Wende Zomnir, made their return to the sector. But in launching their new lines, they faced a much-changed industry environment that prioritised direct-to-consumer selling. Simultaneously, brick-and-mortar retail found new relevance thanks to the return of beauty testers and the rollout of Ulta's shop-in-shops in Target stores and Sephora's similar concept in Kohl's, which continued to blur the lines between mass and prestige.
