Why it matters: The storm has the potential to unleash the top 5 strongest gusts on record in some states, with a wall of wind whipping up a dust storm visible from space. Readings soared into the 70s all the way to the Iowa-Minnesota border. - Wind could knock out power to more than 100,000 people, and complicate cleanup efforts from the devastating weekend tornadoes in Central states.
Parts of Nebraska and Kansas are in tornado and thunderstorm watches this afternoon, accompanied by warnings that flying debris could be fatal to people caught outdoors. An alert received by Axios' Justin Green in Lincoln, Neb. To the east, the Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma warned of nighttime, fast-moving tornadoes in much of Iowa, southeastern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin.
