1 big thing: Weather nightmare 2.0

A monster storm across the Great Plains has 84 million people under some type of high wind warning today, reports Axios' Andrew Freedman.

Why it matters: The storm has the potential to unleash the top 5 strongest gusts on record in some states, with a wall of wind whipping up a dust storm visible from space.

The big picture: This storm has already set all-time high temperatures for December. Readings soared into the 70s all the way to the Iowa-Minnesota border.

  • Wind could knock out power to more than 100,000 people, and complicate cleanup efforts from the devastating weekend tornadoes in Central states.

Parts of Nebraska and Kansas are in tornado and thunderstorm watches this afternoon, accompanied by warnings that flying debris could be fatal to people caught outdoors.

An alert received by Axios' Justin Green in Lincoln, Neb.

To the east, the Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma warned of nighttime, fast-moving tornadoes in much of Iowa, southeastern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin.

The bottom line: Human-caused climate change is making such warm spells more likely to occur.

Housing disparities divide the haves and the have nots

Capital One's Marketplace Index uncovered the factors — and effects — of the current housing crisis.

One finding: 75% of people who make less than $25,000 annually say that they are spending more on housing because of external forces, including sudden rent increases.

The impact.
