Virgil Abloh, Fashion Trailblazer for a New Generation, Has Died
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2021 | | Dear BoF Community "I'm not a designer," Virgil Abloh told me back in 2018, shortly after his debut show for Louis Vuitton. Of course, Virgil was a pioneer in bringing streetwear aesthetics to luxury. But he also reinvented the role of a creative director, injecting it with hip-hop's penchant for sampling and remixing, skateboarding's sense of community and a desire for social progress. Never one for ivory towers, Virgil engaged directly with his fans, making them feel welcome in his world and giving them the courage and "cheat codes," as he called them, to follow in his footsteps. "You can do it too," he insisted. Ultimately, Virgil transcended fashion. He gave us so much more than cool-looking clothes. He gave us something to believe in and belong to. Rest in peace Virgil, you will be missed. Vikram Alexei Kansara, Editorial Director |
