- Deal includes Nokia's Quillion based Multi-PON solution, WiFi fiber modems and Beacons and Altiplano Access Controller
- First customers will access services in capital city of Yerevan. Country-wide roll-out to follow
2 July 2021
Espoo, Finland – Nokia and Telecom Armenia today announced they have agreed to a country-wide deal to introduce gigabit broadband over passive optical network (PON). The PON network was switched on today at an event held by Telecom Armenia.
Telecom Armenia will deploy Nokia's GPON and XGS-PON fiber equipment, which is software upgradable to 25G PON technology in future, along with its Wi-Fi Beacons and Altiplano management platform. Covering both the network and customer homes, the comprehensive solution from Nokia will initially be used by Telecom Armenia to connect customers to broadband access in the capital city of Yerevan before rolling out services to the rest of the country.
Hayk Yesayan, CEO of Telecom Armenia, said: "The Nokia brand is highly respected in Armenia and we're delighted to be working with them on a comprehensive Multi-PON and WiFi solution which enables us to offer 10Gb/s broadband to our customers using integrated XGS-PON solution. The network equipment installed is ready to support 25Gb/s making us the first telco in the region ready for Nokia`s 25G PON technology."
Sandy Motley, President of Nokia Fixed Networks said: "High speed broadband will be important to Europe's post pandemic recovery and we're proud to be working with Telecom Armenia as the sole provider on this fantastic initiative. Working alongside Telecom Armenia, we'll be able to start connecting the country to high speed broadband with a network that can evolve to support new enterprise services and mobile transport needs in the future."

Nokia 7360 ISAM FX access node, part of the Nokia Lightspan series.
Nokia's PON solution
Nokia ISAM FX is a high-capacity access node for massive scale fiber roll-outs. Usually located in the telecom central office, it connects thousands of users via optical fiber, aggregates their broadband traffic and sends it deeper in the network. The Quillion-based fiber access node supports multiple fiber technologies including GPON, XGS-PON and 25GS-PON which can co-exist on the same fiber. The solution enables operators to deliver enhanced broadband services to residential and business customers, offer mobile transport services, and creates new business opportunities such as off-loading mobile traffic. It also offers seamless evolution towards a virtualized access-network (SDN – Software Defined Networking).
Nokia Altiplano solution
The Altiplano Access Controller offers a complete suite of network management as well as SDN control functions to visualize, optimize, and enhance broadband networks. Altiplano automates network lifecycle management activities, and provides operators a single pane of glass to manage the entire access network domain. Its open modular architecture with open APIs allows to integrate easily with OSS/BSS, IT and cloud platforms."
Nokia WiFi Beacon
Nokia WiFi Beacons support the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard and use algorithms to detect and mitigate potential issues at home in real-time. The Beacons always select the strongest Wi-Fi channel, and ensure that client devices are connected in the best possible way to maximize the end-users' broadband experience. The Wi-Fi network can be seamlessly extended by adding Beacons to avoid any deadspots in the house. A mobile app brings ease of installation and management to the end-user.
