35 Republicans join House Democrats in backing Capitol insurrection inquiry

  • 35 Republicans on Wednesday voted alongside House Democrats to advance a bill that would install a committee to investigate the January 6 Capitol insurrection. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy was not one of them. [CNN / Stephen Collinson]
  • After initially obfuscating, McCarthy came out hard against the commission, and privately pressured GOP House colleagues to vote against it. More troubling for Democrats, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also announced his opposition, calling the proposal — negotiated with House Republicans — "slanted and unbalanced." [New York Times / Nicholas Fandos]
  • McConnell's support was key to getting the 10 GOP votes necessary to advance the bill past the Senate. That's where it's likely to stall. McConnell is convinced the party needs Donald Trump to win a majority in the 2022 midterms, despite his role in inciting the Capitol attack. [CNN / Lauren Fox]
  • Democratic lawmakers, and some Republicans, have been appalled by House GOP members' attempts at downplaying the violence on January 6. [CNN]
  • "To the other 90 percent of our friends on the other side of the aisle, holy cow!" Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) said, adding, "Benghazi! You guys chased the former secretary of state all over the country. Spent millions of dollars! We have people scaling the Capitol, hitting the Capitol Police with lead pipes across the head, and we can't get bipartisanship?" [The Hill / Dominick Mastrangelo]

Chinese officials enlist Uyghurs in propaganda denying genocide
  • Chinese officials are denying credible allegations of abuse against the Uyghur population in Xinjiang by ordering them to film videos praising the CCP and denouncing former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for declaring a genocide. [Associated Press / Dake Kang]
  • Few Uyghurs probably have a strong opinion on Mike Pompeo. But China is trying to turn the conversation away from the details of years of repression in Xinjiang, which has included mass sterilizations, forced labor, and reeducation camps. [Associated Press / Dake Kang]
  • The Chinese government makes an immense profit off of Uyghur labor. Xinjiang produces almost half of the world's supply of the polysilicon that makes solar panels; workers mine it under extreme coercion, bound by threats of reeducation and internment. [BBC]
  • Evidence of genocide is readily available. Birth rates in Xinjiang have fallen dramatically in the last four years, and by 43.7 percent from 2017 to 2018. That's the most extreme decline in birth rates for a population over a two-year period since 1950. It's proof of a mass campaign of sterilizations perpetrated the Chinese Communist Party. [Washington Post]
  • Some in Congress are taking steps to try to alleviate the repression of Uyghurs. A bipartisan bill in the House calls on the president to submit a plan of action. The bill would also sanction anyone found complicit in the forced sterilization of Uyghur women. [Axios / Sarah Mucha]
