THE UPFRONT

The Business of Fashion will be taking a break between 24 December 2020 and 3 January 2021. In the meantime, explore our analysis from an unparalleled year for the global fashion industry. We wish you a happy holiday season and a great start to 2021.

Dear BoF Community,

In 2020, fashion was forced to look at itself in the mirror, and found plenty not to like. Brand after brand was exposed for fostering a toxic workplace, mistreating employees of colour or not bothering to hire a diverse staff in the first place. Legendary founders were toppled and once-unimpeachable brands were tarnished. The industry has a chance to rectify its mistakes. An activist movement borne out of the summer's Black Lives Matter protests has vowed to hold fashion to account. Consumers increasingly say they want to spend their money with brands that share their values. In 2021, we'll see whether this year's upheaval will lead to lasting changes.
